Engagement photo shoot ideas

For many couples, the engagement photo shoot is the first time that you will have professional pictures taken together. It may seem scary or intimidating, but we recommend thinking of it as a fun adventure that you and your fiancé are participating in. What else should you do to capture the perfect moment on camera? Here are our tips for the best engagement photos around.

Shoot the photos soon after you are engaged. This may seem like a no brainer, but you can use the images on your wedding website or for the save the date. The pictures are also great gifts for family members and loved ones.

Use the same photographer that is shooting the wedding. You can look at the engagement shoot as a trial for your big day photos. Plus, you’ll get to know your photographer’s style better and he will get to know you as a couple better, too.

Pick a location that means something. Do you love going to the beach together? Then shoot your photos at your favourite beach. If you live in a city with breath-taking views that you often enjoy, then take some pictures with the view as a backdrop for your love.

Do something that you normally do together. Do you play tennis or love to get experimental in the kitchen? Shoot the engagement photos on the tennis court or in the kitchen cooking a meal. If you do something that you don’t normally do or you’ve never done, the photos may end up looking awkward!

If you are using the photos as a Save the Date or actual engagement announcement, make this clear in the image. Hold up a sign with the date of the wedding written in the middle of a heart. ‘She said yes’ signs are also popular on Pinterest. A few good shots of your new ring are also wonderful ways to illustrate that you are engaged.

Trust your photographer. If you don’t know what you want to do for the engagement shoot, then ask your photographer for advice or to suggest some locations for you to scout.

Plan a beauty and hair test for the morning of the shoot. Set up an appointment with the make-up artist and hairstylist you are considering of using on the big day. Have them do your hair and make-up and you’ll get a good idea of what your final wedding photos will look like.

To get a good assortment of images, change your outfit. Choose a casual look and another dressier outfit. Wear clothes that you would normally wear and items that you feel comfortable in. Avoid wearing pieces that are super trendy. You don’t want your photos to feel dated by your fifth wedding anniversary!

Consider the setting when you are choosing your outfit. You want to stand out and be the focal point of the image, so if your location is the woods near your house, don’t wear shades of green and brown. Instead select colours that will make you stand out.
