FULL DAY – HERMANUS (CAPE WHALE COAST ROUTE)

Champagne air, Fynbos covered mountains, sparkling sea vistas, a rich marine life and the best land based whale watching in the world, make Hermanus one of the most magnificent and desirable eco-destinations in the country.

Quaint boutiques, art galleries, open-air cafes, restaurants and craft markets provide a creative, cosmopolitan and hospitable framework to complement the natural attractions. The mild Mediterranean climate encourages around-the-year tourism with the best whale, shark and flower seasons in the winter months.

Whale Season typically runs from June/July to November. There is no guarantee that Whales will be sighted although we will make every effort possible.

Each season, large numbers of Southern Right whales can be seen along the coast. These giant creatures are visible along the famous Cape Whale Route, which spans along the coastline passing Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay en route to Hermanus.

Hermanus is perfectly positioned to offer the best viewing directly from the shore and the promenade is the best spot to watch these magnificent creatures. There is nothing as inspiring as seeing a creature of 40 tons heave its massive body out of the water in a graceful leap or seeing a mother whale teaching her young calf to slap the water surface with its flukes. If you’re lucky, you might even see some dolphins!

To top all the excitement, Hermanus is the only town in the world that has a ‘whale crier’ officially on duty during the whaling season and this is a popular attraction in this town. Stationed at a prime vantage point, the crier is able to spot whales and then sound his horn to let bystanders know that there are whales in the bay.

To experience a close encounter with these gentle giants that come to the Cape each season to breed and calve, NOTHING beats a boat-based whale watching trip. Standing on the side of a boat and clearly meeting the gaze of a whale's eye as it lifts its head above the water allows you to experience nature unrivalled.
